128DJ's Exclusive interview with Des Mitchell.

DJ or producer? Or both?
''I think both is ok so long as you can separate the 2, DJ should always be about the club he's in & the people he's there to ENTERTAIN ! some seem to forget that these days.''

How old were you when you got your first gig?
''15 & proud to tell you it was 37 years ago.''

Which venues have you played at and which is your favourite?
''Wow so many from my past that were institutions in this game, from Hacienda back in 89 for DMC. Ministry London, Thailand, Taiwan & Singapore. Velfarre, King Mhu & Yellow in Japan. Dockside South Africa to Powerzone in Holland. Couldn't really pick a fave but best country is Japan for me.''

Up to now, what is your greatest achievement DJ wise?
''Has to be getting number 5 in UK charts and Number 1 dance record with 'Welcome To The Dance' in 2000. It helped put my daughter Kirsty through College & Uni & she passed with distinction in Forensic Psychology.. can you tell I'm proud.''

When Djing, what distincts you from the rest?
''I play with passion & a love of what I'm doing & after 35+ years that still shows even if there's only 20 people in the room, I want them to go away saying 'wasn't many there but the dj was good.''

What styles of music do you play and which is your favourite?
''Haha I've played in Country's that have no strict genre and come out the other end with my cred intact & I mean alongside Adam Freeland who's the breakbeat king so I dropped some of that, alongside Eddie Halliwell so I've pitched it up hard style, alongside Pete Tong & Hernan Cattaneo so it's been deep proggy & dirty, last summer warming up for Tiesto so your pitch goes up every half hour or so as you know where he's going to go, but most of all I like to play good House Music.''

Top 5 tracks of the moment?
''Well I think it's a lot more than 5 but big players are''
- Tnt v Alex Dimitry - Jingo (miguel migs mix)
- Lys & Lake - La Tromba - (Riva starr mix)
- Slacksons - Lose Control (rob roar & Baumgartner mix)
- Crazibiza - Spinnin around (tommyboy mix) my edit.
- Dario G - Sunchyme (Ben Yates rework)
''Plus some of my bits.''

If you could co-produce with anyone, who would it be and why?
''Laidback Luke because he's the best DJ showman around right now, tough sound in studio plus AMAZING TO SEE ! & Probably Riva Starr & I know nothing about him them or her !
& off course my studio partner Christian Davies who's going to be HUGE.''

Who are your main musical influences?
''I started way back as kid listening to Kiss radio cassettes from New York, wblk NYC with Tony Humphreys on the turntables & that turned to the scratching & cutting from Flash & Cash Money. I got to play with Toney Humphreys & C J Mackintosh back in 1990 & we all became friends from then, my phone book is the stuff of promoters dreams lol.''

Any plans for the future?
''till doing my thing, making tunes and playing them. New tunes out now summer 2010.
'Wanna See You Dance' as The Mitchell Project on Metrogroove records
& 'Call Me' out as Des Mitchell & Christian Davies on Bazooka records.''

What advice could you give to up and coming DJ's / producers wanting to get there name out there?
''I will say that it's not just about the DJ anymore to get gigs, afraid you have to have something they can listen too (daft I say) so they know what kind of direction you play in.... mind you that's if they play what they make or remix ! oh & do it for the love of it, I still do.''
